A Little History
In Your Ear was founded by Carlos Chafin and the late Robbin Thompson in 1990 as a music composition and production company. Since then, the business has grown into a multi-studio recording and post-production facility situated in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond's vibrant production district. In Your Ear is where Chris Brown recorded F.A.M.E., winner of the 2012 Grammy for Best R&B album. It is now the home of Shockoe Records and is where thousands of recording projects for music projects, film, television and radio have been scored, recorded and mixed. Our clients include companies such as Coke, Geico, Kraft Foods, McDonalds and others. It is also the facility tapped by top Hollywood producers for dialog production on movies like Bad Times At The El Royal, and The Help and television shows including The Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Swagger, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond..
Our 18,000 square foot facilities, built in 1999, are hidden behind four antebellum row houses. Employing the talents of California’s top acoustical architects, studio bau:ton, and Richmond architect Bob Steele of BOB, the dream of an acoustically and technically correct facility came to central Virginia. The building is now home to In Your Ear Studios, WNRN, Richmond Bizsense, Farnsworth, Filmspire, Taylor Bess Music and VArtisans.
Whether it's for a film set for international release or production for a podcast, In Your Ear is the destination for top advertising agencies, independent and studio films, television production, recording artists and students. Our educational offerings, which include classes in conjunction with neighboring Virginia Commonwealth University, have become an important part of our mission to raise the bar higher for the creative production community in Central Virginia
